You're reading: Putin rejects ultimatums against Russia over Ukraine events

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Western logic underlying sanctions against Russia is unacceptable.

“These people [in Ukraine] have come to power in an armed, anti-constitutional way. Yes, after the coup they held elections, but strangely, somehow those who either financed or conducted this coup found themselves at the head of the state and have been trying to forcefully suppress the part of the country’s population, who disagree with these developments, without any attempt to hold at least some kind of negotiations,” Putin told the Security Council on July 22.

In doing so they “gave almost an ultimatum (against Russia): either let us destroy part of this population which is ethnically and culturally, historically close to Russia, or we’ll impose some sanctions against you,” he said.

“This is an odd logic. And, of course, it is absolutely unacceptable,” said the head of state.
