MARIUPOL - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko believes the main task of Pavlo Zhebrivsky, the new head of Donetsk Military and Civilian Administration, is to protect the region from Russian-backed separatissts and to ensure fair and transparent local elections.

“The first and most important thing: don’t forget that you are simultaneously becoming head of the military and civilian administration. You should work with the Armed Forces, the National Guard and the other defense and security agencies to ensure reliable protection of the entire Ukraine and to protect the region from militants,” the president said at a meeting in Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast, on June11 while introducing the new head of the region.

The president also said he expects the new head of the region to organize fair local elections.

“Fair and transparent elections are a unique global instrument for solving political conflicts. It t some extent applies to the occupied territories, which are currently run by puppets, who have never been elected by anyone,” Poroshenko said.

“Another important task faced by you is to ensure transparent and fair local elections,” Poroshenko said.
