President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden have discussed by telephone the process of the United States' providing aid to help strengthen the defence capability of the Ukrainian army, the press service of the Ukrainian president has said.

“The president of Ukraine appealed to the vice president of the United States as the Senate chairman to support the relevant legislative initiative,” reads a statement.

The press service of the Ukrainian head of state noted the parties also discussed the importance of defining the next steps and measures in case of a further escalation of the situation in Donbas.

In addition, Poroshenko and Biden discussed the possibility of issuing further macro-financial aid to Ukraine.

Poroshenko assured the U.S. official of the “irreversibility of the course of reforms in Ukraine and fight against corruption.”

The two sides stressed the importance of the civilized world’s unity to support Ukraine.

“The matter concerns not only the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. If we do not win, the world will face geopolitical upheavals,” Poroshenko said.
