You're reading: Poroshenko awaits European Parliament declaring DPR, LPR terrorist organizations

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, at a meeting with representatives of the European People's Party (EPP), has stressed the importance of declaring the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) and Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) as terrorist organizations, the press service of the head of state has reported.

“The president noted the importance of recognizing LPR and DPR as
terrorists, because after such a resolution everyone who supports,
coordinates and finances these organizations may be subject to
international sanctions. Today a respective resolution is being prepared
in the U.S. Senate and the Australian parliament,” reads the statement.

In this regard, Poroshenko urged the European Parliament to take a respective decision in this regard as well.

The president said it was important that the EU Council at the level
of ambassadors was considering concrete sanctions against Russia.

“We hope that the leaders of European states will hear the voice of
the European Parliament on the third stage of sanctions,” Poroshenko
said.

He also thanked MEPs “for a strong resolution,” which it adopted in support of Ukraine.

“A friend in need is a friend indeed. The European Parliament has
demonstrated its support for Ukraine in the fight against the
terrorists,” he said.

The newly elected president of the EPP in the European Parliament,
Manfred Weber, noted that Poroshenko’s election as the Ukrainian
president had given a “clear EU integration signal” to the Ukrainian
people.

“We pay our first visit after the elections to the European
Parliament to Kyiv to express our solidarity and cooperation with you
and the people of Ukraine,” he said.

Weber also added: “It is clear for all that Russia is responsible for
the situation in the east of Ukraine. We must do everything we can to
put pressure on the Russian side.”
