Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told U.S. Vice President Joe Biden over the phone that he welcomes the adoption of the Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014 by the U.S. Congress, the Ukrainian leader's press service has reported.

During this telephone conversation, Poroshenko expressed hope that U.S. President Barack Obama would soon sign this act into law, the press service said.

Poroshenko and Biden also exchanged opinions concerning financial mechanisms to support Ukraine. Biden reaffirmed the U.S. authorities’ intentions to extend assistance to Ukraine and reiterated Washington’s readiness to make efforts to secure financial allocations through the International Monetary Fund.

Russia, for its part, has criticized the adoption of the Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014 by the U.S. Congress, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Interfax, adding that Moscow’s response would depend on whether or not this document would be signed by President Obama.

The Ukraine Freedom Support Act would authorize the U.S. president to impose extra sanctions on the Russian energy sector and Russia’s Rosobornexport company and help Ukraine’s armed forces, defense industry, energy sector and displaced persons.
