You're reading: People’s assembly gets under way on Kyiv’s Maidan

A People's Viche (assembly) to mark the Day of Dignity and Freedom began in central Kyiv on Nov. 21.

Several thousand people have gathered near one of the monuments in the square, they are holding Ukrainian national flags, the flags of Maidan Self-Defense and red-black flags, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent said.

Public figures are speaking from a stage installed just beside the monument.

By tradition, the Viche began with a prayer.

Prior to the Viche, the assembled watched short films about the Euromaidan events and the hostilities in Donbas on a big screen installed on the Square.

The Viche attendees have also been joined by a column of activists from Maidan Self-Defense which held its own March of Dignity, from Mykhailivska Square through central streets as far as European Square.
