You're reading: Nuland: US regards Russia’s demands on federalization of Ukraine as unacceptable

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Victoria Nuland, has said that she believes that Russia's interference in the process of amending the Ukrainian Constitution is unacceptable.

“It is the Ukrainians, not outside forces, who should decide on what
their country is going to look like in the future. Russia’s making
demands on federalization, which would lead Ukraine to great risks of
the country’s breakup, is absolutely unacceptable,” she said during a
video standup at the seventh Kyiv Security Forum on Thursday.

According to the Department of State representative, Russia should
promote disarmament of unlawful groups rather than call for disruption
of Ukraine.

At the quadrilateral talks on the Ukrainian situation next week the
US is ready to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and right to make its own
choice, she reminded.

“We are ready to push Russia to demonstrate, both in word and deed, that it is a good neighbor,” Nuland added.

Estimating stands of the parties on the meeting’s eve, Nuland said
that they are now “very distant from each other,” but that the dialog
should be continued.
