U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland has given high assessment to the work of the Ukrainian parliament on carrying out reforms, including on preparing amendments to the constitution on power de-centralization, Verkhovna Rada speaker's spokesman Dmytro Stoliarchuk said.

Verkhovna Rada is the engine of changes in Ukraine and we are very proud of your persistent work, Stoliarchuk quoted Nuland as saying during a meeting with Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Groysman in Kyiv on July 15.

The amendments to the constitution on power de-centralization should assist development of democracy and civil society and will become a dividing line between Soviet past and European future of Ukraine, Groysman said.

“Constitutional changes are a dividing line between Soviet past and European future and tomorrow is the start of historical period – the vote to include this bill to agenda,” Hroisman said.

Groysman said that he talked on July 14 with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande and that the two leaders assessed highly results of Ukrainian parliament’s work and emphasized the importance of power de-centralization in Ukraine and implementing Minsk agreements in the framework of constitutional reform.

It is planned to consider a number of bills on cooperation with international financial institutions on July 16, Hroisman said.

It has been reported that Nuland is visiting Ukraine and during her visit meetings with Ukrainian authorities, politicians, businessmen, civil society representatives are planned in order to discuss a set of bilateral and regional issues.
