You're reading: Metinvest says Avdiyivka coke plant suffers worst bombardment since ceasefire

Avdiyivka coke chemical plant (Donetsk region), part of Metinvest Group, on May 21 suffered its most intense bombardment since the announcement of the ceasefire.

According to a company press release, one employee was killed, two were injured.

Shells damaged the main equipment at the plant.

The press service noted that this was the most powerful bombardment after the announcement of the ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons. At the same time, it said that the plant has been suffering intense attacks since July 2014 – during this time about 200 shells exploded at the plant.

Employees were working during the bombardment.

“The management of the plant and Metinvest Group expresses deep condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. The company will provide all necessary assistance to the family of the deceased and the injured workers,” reads the press release.

It is specified that the fire seriously damaged the mechanical repair and railway workshops of the company. Administrative and technological buildings were partially destroyed. Direct hits destroyed a diesel locomotive and a railway crane. The railway track and a catenary were significantly damaged.
