You're reading: Lukashenko thinks Ukrainian situation has worsened since elections

Minsk - The Ukrainian situation has worsened since the elections and Belarus cannot put up with this, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.

“We cannot agree with the trend of a deteriorating situation in Ukraine, not just in the Donetsk region but also in the whole country. We hoped the elections would aid improvement and stabilization but, alas, we do not see this happening,” Lukashenko said at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Minsk on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

In Lukashenko’s opinion, Belarus’s situation is closely linked to Russia. “This is indivisible; your problems are our problems too. But I have to say that the recent situation along our borders has been a source of our concern,” the Belarusian president said.

“We cannot agree with the activity of Western nations along the western borders of our union state,” the president continued.

The situation is putting pressure on Belarus, “which is far from being insignificant for Russia,” Lukashenko said. “Naturally, it is also pressuring Russia, which already has lots of problems. So, we cannot help but be concerned about the pile of problems around us,” the Belarusian leader added.

He underlined the importance of Minsk and Moscow having a common opinion on the evolving situation and ways of responding to it. “Hence, I would like you and us, together with Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin] and colleagues from the Defense Ministry to discuss the situation and to arrive at a common opinion or even at a common position so that we can act in the same manner,” Lukashenko said.

“The problem exists and it needs to be solved,” he said.
