You're reading: Man detained after opening fire on Kharkiv checkpoint

Staff of the Prosecutor's Office for Ukraine's Kharkiv region have detained a man accused of firing his automatic weapon at police officers manning a checkpoint at the entrance to Kharkiv on Wednesday 17 evening, a Prosecutor's Office spokesman told Interfax-Ukraine.

‘The man fired his automatic weapon at policemen. None of the officers was injured, but two traffic police cars were riddled with bullets. The policemen fired in response. The attacker sustained a wound and was detained. He was treated by doctors at the scene. His life is not in danger,’ the spokesman said.

A criminal inquiry has been opened into the incident.
