You're reading: Lavrov cautiously optimistic about Ukraine settlement process

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says he sees reasons for cautious optimism in settling the crisis in Ukraine.

“There are reasons for cautious optimism,” Lavrov said in an interview with the France 24 TV channel.

Lavrov also did not confirm that Moscow was willing to host negotiations on settling the Ukraine crisis.

“In line with the agreement with our Ukrainian partners, the OSCE, the DPR and LPR [the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics], we are working on convening another contact group meeting in Minsk. This is very important from the viewpoint of intensifying the implementation of the Minsk protocol signed in September this year. This is what we are seeking to achieve at the moment,” he said.
