You're reading: ICRC officials monitor clearance of Russian humanitarian cargo

Officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are monitoring the inspection and clearance of the humanitarian convoy expected to cross the Russian-Ukrainian border, ICRC official Galina Balzamova said on Aug. 21.

“Our officials are with the Ukrainian and Russian customs officers, but they are not involved in the inspection of the cargo, they are observers,” Balzamova said.

Balzamova said the ICRC officials on Wednesday studied the safety of the route connecting the village of Izvaryne (Ukraine) to Luhansk. “The main purpose of yesterday’s mission was the general evaluation of the situation and the possibility of transporting the humanitarian cargo,” she said.

“OSCE reconnaissance officers visited Luhansk and stated the fact that there is no electrical power and water and there are few residents in the streets,” Balzamova said.

“The situation changes every minute and we still don’t know which ICRC officials will accompany the humanitarian convoy,” she said.
