Paris - President of France Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised that the EU will play its role in association with its partners (the United States, the G7, IMF) to facilitate the implementation of the gas agreement recently reached between Russia-Ukraine-EU.

This follows from the communiqué issued by The Élysée Palace (official residence of the President of the French Republic) on Oct. 31.

It said that President Hollande, Chancellor Merkel spoke tonight with Russian and Ukrainian counterparts Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko in a Normandy format.

“The four participants welcomed the conclusion of negotiations on Russian gas supplies to Ukraine, conducted through the mediation of the European Union,” reads the communiqué.

As reported, on Oct. 30 Russia, Ukraine and the EU as a result of five-month talks signed a legally binding protocol that ensures gas supplies for the period up to the end of March 2015.
