Brussels - Members of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL), a faction in the European Parliament, have condemned the Ukrainian authorities' plans to ban the Communist Party of Ukraine.

GUE/NGL, which is the sixth largest faction in the 751-member
European Parliament with 52 seats, on Wednesday expressed its “great
concern regarding this attempt to ban the party and all its symbols.”

“The Group calls on the President [Ukrainian President Petro
Poroshenko] not to sign this law and to safeguard the Communist Party of
Ukraine’s parliamentary statute and resulting immunity,” GUE/NGL said
in a statement.

“Not only do the actions taken against the Communist Party of Ukraine
highlight the failure of Ukraine to meet its obligations as a party to
many key international human rights instruments, they reflect a
dangerous trend in the new Ukrainian government’s policy to suppress
critical voices,” the group said.

The faction will forward appropriate letters to the president of the
European Parliament and to the Council of Europe, asking them to express
their views on this matter.
