Kharkiv - A man who went on a shooting spree near Kharkiv on Wednesday evening, Sep. 17 demanded a car with a full tank, the public relations department of the Interior Ministry's Main Department for the Kharkiv region reported.

“At around 8 p.m., a man wearing camouflage approached the police. He was holding a gun in one hand and a grenade in the other hand. The man demanded that the police give him a car with a full tank. When the police tried to comfort him and get to the bottom of the situation without emotions, he fired a shot in the air,” the source said.

According to the agency’s press service, the man removed the detonation pin and promised to set the grenade off when he saw that a police unit had arrived.

“Civilian casualties were avoided thanks to the professional actions taken by the special police battalion,” the agency said.

An investigation is underway.

A criminal case has been opened based on Article 348 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (attempted murder of a law enforcement official).

According to earlier reports, citing the Kharkiv region’s prosecutors, an unknown man was detained for going on a shooting spree at a checkpoint near Kharkiv.

“The man opened fire on the police with a gun. Law enforcement officers were not hurt, but two traffic police vehicles were damaged. The police returned fire. The attacker was wounded and detained. He was given medical assistance and is not in a life- threatening condition,” the press service for the Kharkiv region’s prosecutors told Interfax-Ukraine.
