You're reading: Canada imposes sanctions against Crimean and Russian officials

Washington - Canada on Monday imposed sanctions against seven Russian and three Crimean officials, who are "politically responsible for the crisis," according to the official statement by Ottawa reported by the U.S. press. Sanctions foresee bans on travel to Canadian territory and the freezing of the assets of the officials, if there are any.

According to the statement by the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the list of people against whom the sanctions were imposed include: Deputy PM of Russia Dmitry Rogozin, Crimean PM Serhiy Aksionov and Chairman of the Crimean parliament Volodymyr Konstantynov.

Harper is to visit Ukraine on March 22 to meet with the Ukrainian Premier Arseniy Yatseniuk.

According to U.S. press, Harper will be the first leader of a G8 country to come to Kyiv since the worsening of relations between Ukraine and Russia due to the Crimean crisis.

There are 1.2 million Canadian citizens of Ukrainian origin in Canada.
