You're reading: Border patrol and customs officers prevented Ukrainian citizen from taking $2.8 million out of country in fuel tank

Ukrainian border patrol and customs officers have found $2.8 million on a Ukrainian citizen at Hoptivka checkpoint (Kharkiv region) on the Ukrainian-Russian border.

The citizen was planning to take the money out of the country, border officials said.

“At Hoptivka checkpoint on the border with Russia, at about 1900 on July 9, $2.8 million was found, due to information received by employees of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. The major part of the cash was in a Mitsubishi Pajero car belonging to a Ukrainian citizen, who was trying to leave the country,” reads the statement of the press service of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Border patrol together with customs officers found the money during a detailed examination of the vehicle. The driver hid the money in a reserve fuel tank.

All the relevant agencies have been informed of the incident. The circumstances of the crime are being investigated.
