You're reading: Berkut commander involved in shootings on Maidan detained

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained one of the Berkut commanders involved in shooting protestors on Maidan during the Revolution of Dignity, acting SBU Chief Vasyl Hrytsak has said.

“Today in Kyiv, during a special operation, the SBU detained a
commander of a police regiment of Berkut involved in shootings on Maidan
during the Revolution of Dignity,” Hrytsak said at a briefing for
representatives of foreign diplomatic missions to Ukraine on June 26.

According to Hrytsak, the detainee is suspected by the police of involvement in the murders of protestors in February 2014.

The detainee was brought to the Prosecutor General’s Office. He
received a notice of suspicion of committing a crime. Restriction
measures on him are currently being determined.
