MOSCOW - The politician Boris Nemtsov was killed with a pistol with a silencer, Vadim Prokhorov, a lawyer for the slain politician's family, told Interfax.

“When she heard the sounds of the gunshots, the witness Anna Durytska thought those were firecrackers and started looking for them under the feet. It was a pistol with a silencer,” Prokhorov said.

For his part, a source told Interfax that the search for the murder weapon continues, and ballistic tests are being carried out.

A group of divers has been hired to search the bottom of the Moscow River in western and northwestern Moscow where the criminals had supposedly fled after the crime, the source.

If found, the pistol will become key evidence in the criminal inquiry, the source said.

The opposition politician Nemtsov was killed near the Kremlin in central Moscow on the night of Feb. 27. Five people have been arrested. Five people have been arrested. A source in law enforcement authorities told Interfax earlier that preliminary data point to Dadayev, a former deputy commander of the Chechen North Battalion, as the perpetrator of the crime.

All suspects were indicted “on conspiracy to murder or commit a contract killing” and of illegal acquisition and possession of a firearm.
