Moscow - The Russian Foreign Ministry has described Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta's remarks that his country allegedly may unify with Moldova in 2018 as "irresponsible and unacceptable", expressing hope that the European Union will offer an appropriate response to them.

“In our opinion, it is irresponsible and unacceptable to multiply from outside such statements now that the election campaign has been launched in the Republic of Moldova. We expect the authorities in Chisinau to give an appropriate assessment of them. We also hope that an appropriate reaction will follow from Brussels and other European capitals,” the Russian ministry said on its website on Tuesday, Sep. 16.

Moscow is concerned by Ponta’s remarks, it said.

“The straightforward calls of this candidate for the post of Romania’s president to “implement the second great unification in 2018″ clearly show that certain political circles in Bucharest are still harboring annexationist plans toward this neighboring sovereign and neutral country,” it said.

According to earlier news reports, the Romanian prime minister said that Moldova would cease to exist as an independent state in 2018 and would become part of Romania.
