You're reading: German deputy: EU should introduce third level of sanctions against Russia

Russia has not taken any measures to de-escalate the conflict in east Ukraine, therefore it is necessary to introduce the third package of sanctions against it, a member of the foreign affairs committee of the Bundestag, Karl-Georg Wellmann, has said.

“I think that sanctions are inevitable, because, as we know, Russia supplies military equipment to the east of Ukraine – tanks, heavy weaponry. And there is no evidence that Russia will move to de-escalation. Therefore, the EU should, if possible, quickly introduce the third level of sanctions,” he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that Ukraine, after signing an association agreement with the EU, requires political and economic stabilization.

“Measures should be taken against Russia,” Wellmann said.

He expressed confidence that Germany would also support tough actions against Moscow.

“Germany’s position is that the conflict must be resolved. We are trying, with all, including Poland, to persuade Russia to change its position, but if it does not, then there will be sanctions – the federal government earlier pointed to that very clearly,” he said.

On July 16, European Union leaders will discuss the Ukrainian question and may approve new sanctions against Russia. During the previous meeting on June 28, EU leaders warned Russia of a new round of sanctions that will be introduced if the militants make no efforts to de-escalate the crisis in eastern Ukraine.
