You're reading: State television and radio committee backs diversification of paper supplies to Ukraine

The state committee for television and radio broadcasting will take measures to create favorable conditions for the development of Ukrainian book publishing in 2015 and the committee pays attention to the situation with imports of paper, as the major part of paper is imported from Russia.

The press service of the committee reported on Jan. 29 that Committee Chairman Oleh Nalyvaiko said that a serious problem with paper has appeared, as Ukrainian factories almost do not product paper now.

“Paper has become a strategic resource. The major part of it is coming from Russia, the smaller amount – from Poland, Finland and China. We should make efficient steps to diversify paper supplies to Ukraine. We should think on the restoration of Ukrainian paper production,” he said.

At a meeting of the committee it was decided to popularize Ukrainian publishing and reading.

“Last year the committee’s efforts were aimed at retaining those small benefits for publishers and books and newspaper sellers stipulated in Ukrainian law. Amendments to the Tax Code have been made thanks to which the state left benefits for VAT payment to book and periodical press publishers,” Nalyvaiko said.

He said that the retaining of benefits does not settle all the problems. He said that sales should be increased and new chains for selling books should be created.

The committee is drawing up proposals which would stimulate local communities to provide premises for selling books at beneficial rent rates,” reads the report.
