Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and US Vice President Joseph Biden have discussed cooperation in the energy and defense sectors and in promoting reforms in Ukraine, Poroshenko has said.

Within the next several days and weeks, our coordination of cooperation in the areas of security, reforms, economy, finances, and energy will be extremely productive,” Poroshenko said at a joint press conference with Biden in Kyiv on Friday.

“We have discussed our cooperation in the energy sector and a lot of areas of cooperation, from nuclear energy to crisis coordination in case gas supplies are called into question,” he said.

The Ukrainian president pointed out that documents on ensuring energy security of both Ukraine and the EU had been signed earlier in Brussels.

“Energy security of both Europe and Ukraine has been guaranteed today,” he said.

The parties also discussed cooperation between Ukraine and the U.S. in promoting reforms, Poroshenko said.

“The lion’s share of the reforms “has been included in a draft coalition agreement, and a significant part of them figure in the Strategy 2020,” he said.

Ukrainian officials are planning to present the country’s reform strategy in the EU and in the world in the near future, he said.

“We have agreed upon considerable consultative and financial assistance that the U.S. and our European partners could render us for carrying out reforms,” he said.

Poroshenko also thanked the U.S. for continued cooperation in the defense sector.

“I am sure that this really helps us in ensuring the defense of our state’s independence and sovereignty,” Poroshenko said.
