You're reading: Mogherini: Escalation of conflict in eastern Ukraine will worsen EU-Russian relations

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini has urged Russia to influence separatist leaders in eastern Ukraine, and to stop supporting them.

“This further escalation of the open armed conflict has tragic consequences for a population greatly suffering already for far too long. It would inevitably lead to a further grave deterioration of relations between the EU and Russia. I call therefore openly upon Russia to use its considerable influence over separatist leaders and to stop any form of military, political or financial support,” reads the statement made by Mogherini, posted on Jan. 24 after the Mariupol shelling that led to the deaths of dozens people.

According to her, those responsible for the escalation must stop actions and live up to their commitments.

As reported, on Jan. 24, militants shelled Mariupol with ‘Grad’ multiple rocket launchers. The death toll currently stands at 27, with 97 civilians injured.

The Azov special battalion has reported renewed shelling of Mariupol’s eastern outskirts by ‘Grad’ rocket launchers.
