The European Union will not deny membership to Ukraine if Kyiv holds reforms and meets the EU criteria, Ambassador of Sweden to Ukraine Andreas von Beckerath said.

“We must remember that no country has been denied membership in the EU if it fulfilled its obligation to conduct the necessary reforms,” Beckerath said during a workshop for the youth entitled “How to be Prepared for Challenges to International Security? Forecasts and Scenarios” in Kyiv on Friday.

According to him, the Ukrainian society and the government must now focus on implementing reforms.

“It should be noted that Article 49 (of the Maastricht Treaty) clearly states that any European country that meets the Copenhagen criteria of a market economy, democracy and human rights is the right to apply for membership in the European Union,” he said.
