Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko is initiating the creation of a charitable foundation to restore the building of the Zhovten movie theater.

“The Zhovten movie theater should remain a center of cinematography and a cultural center in our capital. Any attempt to restructure the cinema will be stopped. We are initiating the creation of a charitable foundation ‘Let’s Rebuild [the Cinema] Together.’ We propose that cinema director Lyudmila Gordeladze head this foundation,” Klitschko’s press office quoted him as saying on Oct. 31.

The mayor also proposed that Kyiv City Council members ask the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Interior Ministry to urgently investigate the arson of the movie theater.

“The executors of this terrible deed must be brought to justice and must answer before all residents of the capital,” he said.

He also said that Kyiv City Council would create a special commission to investigate the incident.

As reported, a fire broke out at the Zhovten movie theater at 9:40 a.m. on Oct. 29 and was extinguished after nearly four hours. The fire destroyed the roof of the cinema building on an area of 300 square meters. Nobody was killed or injured in the incident. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage are being determined.
