You're reading: Rompuy: EU will decide on sanctions against Russia within a week

Brussels - European Union leaders have given Russia a week to reverse its course in Ukraine or face a new round of sanctions, European Council Herman Van Rompuy said at the press conference in early hours of Aug. 31.

Rompuy said the 28 leaders meeting in Brussels on Aug. 30 had agreed to take “further significant steps” if Moscow did not back down.

He said the European commission had been ordered to produce options for fresh sanctions within a week.

“Everybody is fully aware that we have to act quickly given the evolution on the ground and the tragic loss of life in recent days,” Rompuy said.

He did not specify the nature of the new sanctions, but said the proposals would be ready within a week.
