WASHINGTON - U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs on July 14 passed the Stability and Democracy (STAND) for Ukraine Act (H.R. 5094) to toughen sanctions against Russia over Ukraine, the committee said on its website.

The act, which clarifies the position of the United States on Russia’s illegal occupation of Crimea, tightens sanctions on Russia, and drives new innovations to provide support for Ukraine, will be submitted to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The legislation was introduced by Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) late in April 2016, to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
