You're reading: Ukraine condemns Cyprus’ resolution on lifting anti-Russian sanctions

Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has condemned the adoption by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus of a resolution on July 7 that suggests that anti-Russian sanctions be lifted.

“The MFA of Ukraine condemns the adoption on July 7, 2016, by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus the resolution with proposals to lift sanctions against Russia,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Although the resolution itself is not legally binding, the fact of its adoption causes concern. It shows neglect by some Cypriot MPs of the fundamental principles of inter-state relations based on international law. This move is nothing but indirect support for the aggressor,” the statement said.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry says that recent decisions taken by the European Union to extend the anti-Russian sanctions have once again demonstrated the unity of the European democratic community in condemning Kremlin aggression.

“We hope that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, which has supported this decision of the European Union, will firmly remain committed to international law and European values and will continue to support international efforts to stop the aggression of Russia against Ukraine,” the statement said.

Prior to that, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Cyprus’ resolution is an indicator of increasing understanding of negative consequences of the sanctions against Russia.
