Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has held a meeting with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer in Davos.

“Negotiations with president of the International Committee of the Red Cross Maurer have started,” spokesman of the Ukrainian president Sviatoslav Tseholko wrote on his Twitter account.

Later Tseholko reported that during the talks Poroshenko had urged the Red Cross to step up efforts on the release of all the hostages, including those illegally held and convicted in Russia, namely, Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov and pilot Nadia Savchenko.

“Poroshenko drew attention of the Red Cross to the human rights violations of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars in the Russia-occupied Crimea,” Ukrainian president’s spokesman added.

As reported by the president’s press service, Maurer informed Poroshenko that he intended to raise over $64 million for the ICRC mission’s humanitarian activities in 2016, in addition to almost $100 million spent on the aid projects for Ukraine in 2014-2015.
