You're reading: Poll shows more than 20 percent of Ukrainians call for Ukrainian-Russian union with part of Donetsk region under Kyiv control

Some of 22 percent of Ukrainians residing in Donetsk region, the part which is under Kyiv control, support political and economic union of Ukraine and Russia, while 48 percent of the population in uncontrolled areas of Donbas stand for such a union, according to Donbas Think Tank opinion poll data.

In response to the question “Would you like Ukraine to join one of the economic or political associations in the nearest future?” 48 percent of respondents with uncontrolled by Kyiv part of Donetsk region would prefer a political and economic union with Russia [48 percent], 9 percent would favor the cooperation with the European Union, 30 percent of respondents – for the non-alignment of Ukraine to any political or economic union, whereas 13 percent of respondents were undecided.

At the same time, most respondents with controlled to Kyiv part of Donetsk region were in favor of non-alignment of Ukraine to any political or economic union (38 percent), 23 percent – for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, 22 percent – for the economic and political alliance with Russia, undecided were 17 percent of respondents.

According to the survey, 46 percent of respondents with controlled by Kyiv part of Donetsk region support the federal structure of Ukraine, 38 percent are for the unitary structure of the state, 16 percent are undecided.

At the same time, 68 percent among the respondents of the uncontrolled part of Donetsk region support the federal structure of Ukraine, 15 percent – unitary, 17 percent – undecided.

The poll was conducted from May 30 to June 13, 2016 by means of personal interview. The sampling population on the uncontrolled territory of the region consists of 605 respondents, whilst 805 respondents are in the controlled part. The margin of error in the uncontrolled area is 3.98 percent and 3.45 percent – in the controlled area.
