MOSCOW - The Russian Foreign Ministry is surprised that the EU has refrained from openly and directly condemning an armed attack on a police department building in Yerevan, the killing of a policeman, and an act of hostage-taking.

A statement by the European Union Delegation to Armenia coordinated with the chiefs of mission of the EU member-states accredited in the country “surprisingly (…) does not see fit to directly and clearly condemn the criminal actions, namely an armed attack on a police station, the killing of a policeman, and hostage-taking,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary.

“Instead of this, it noticeably puts an emphasis on demands for the authorities ‘to observe the principle of proportionality’ and to fully investigate ‘all cases of alleged wrongdoing by the police’,” the commentary says.

“It is hard to shake the feeling that the European Union diplomats are openly playing up to those forces in Armenia that are seeking to destabilize the internal political situation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
