MOSCOW - The European Union's economic sanctions imposed on Russia will be extended for another six months, a European source told Interfax.
The EU’s economic sanctions will be extended for six months in order to help make progress in implementing the Minsk agreements, the source said, advising all sides involved to more actively tackle the problems given the concrete situation in Eastern Ukraine rather than speculate on the subject of what is happening at negotiation halls in Brussels.
Earlier this week, the EU Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) agreed another six-month extension of economic sanctions against Russia until January 2017, but the EU Council has yet to confirm this decision.
European Council President Donald Tusk said in Helsinki on June 16 that the EU would extend the sanctions against Russia prior to the EU’s June 28-29 summit.
However, a number of countries are opposed to an automatic extension of sanctions and demand that this issue be discussed.
