About 140 Belarusians took part in the fighting in Ukraine on both sides of the conflict, according to data at the Belarusian Interior Ministry's Main Directorate against Organized Crime and Corruption.

“About 140 Belarusian citizens took part in the fighting on the Donbas front. Eight of them died,” the Directorate said.

The Directorate sent 16 dossiers on 24 individuals to the Investigative Committee and the Prosecutor General’s Office. Nine more are still being prepared with respect to 11 Belarusian citizens, one of them dead.

In January 2016 Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko ordered “instant” inquiries into the militants who fought in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier Belarusian Interior Minister Igor Shunevich said dozens of criminal inquiries could be launched against the Belarusians fighting in Donbas.
